Pheaturing Dean Lee

PHIRST OF

Hi there, welcome to another entry of the Phile, thanks for stopping by, I am your host Jason 'No Bolitas' Peverett. So, this is a disturbing trend: celebrity death hoaxes on Twitter. Kanye West was rumored to be killed in a car accident. Kanye announced that he’s not dead. He just wishes he was. The “Today” show had an update on another guy who wishes he were dead: convicted swindler Bernie Madoff. The report said, “He shares a cell with a convicted drug offender, and he eats pizza cooked by a child molester.” They do make the best pizzas... I haven't got an e-mail on Sarah Palin yet. I want her book and her on the Phile, so if you know anybody that knows Ms. Palin, please e-mail me at thepeverettphile@gmail.com. Anyway,
Sarah Palin’s first stop on her tour for her book will be the Oprah show... shouldn’t she be on Maury first? Remember my Segway incident a few months back? Well, it seems I am the poster child for Segway safety. Take a look at this poster.

Yep, that's me on the Segway. So, have you seen who is the villain in the new Spider-Man movie? If not, here it is!

I love those motivational posters you can buy at the mall. When I find interesting ones I like to show you on the Phile what they are. I've been doing this for awhile, but nothing beats this one.

And now for the popular on-line game...

Okay, I think I hit an all time low. What do you think? Okay, now from the home office in Port Jefferson, New York, here is this week's...

Okay, let's get to it. Today's gust is the lead singer for the band Dean Lee & The Unwelcome Guest who are currently recording their new album. Please welcome to the Phile... Dean Lee.

Me: Hello, Dean, welcome to the Phile. Your band might be The Unwelcome Guest, but you are always invited to the Phile and will be an invited guest. So, where did the band name come from?

Dean: Hey, I like what you've done to the place. It's a reference to the Woody Guthrie song "The Unwelcome Guest", a mystical conversation between a robber and his horse about the greed of the wealthy and the struggle of the working class.

Me: Who is in the band?

Dean: T, Mike, and T.J. were in a country cover band together before I moved to Richmond called Eagle Summit, so there was good chemistry to start with. I met Jeff up in Harrisonburg when he played bass in Albuquerque and asked him to join.

Me: How would you explain your music, Dean?

Dean: I think I'm aiming for something very close to the root of it all and hope that something original happens. The bands that exist in our minds as great/classic rock & roll were kids being exposed to the folk, blues, jazz, country, and r&b they could get their hands on. Nowadays, those genres from that time period are far better documented and it's still very fertile soil to dig in for influence. In a process of "you are what you eat" and knowing what stones have been turned, you attempt to make something new. I'm a big fan of inconsistency.

Me: Let's talk about where you're from... Virginia. So, is Virginia really for lovers?

Dean: Virginia has lots of battlefields to walk around in. To answer your question- yes, you can't walk down the street without having to step over a couple making love on the sidewalk.

Me: Are you originally from there?

Dean: Yes, I grew up in Nokesville, outside of Manassas.

Me: How long have you been playing music, Dean?

Dean: I guess about 14 years. I played bass and guitar in some punk and hardcore bands when I was younger.

Me: So, ever played or opened for any national acts? Who would you like to open or play with? Aerosmith, Nashville Pussy, Foghat?

Dean: A)Yes, in May we opened for Wayne Hancock and it was a good time. B) I would like to play with The Black Shade. C) All of the above.

Me: Megan, your manager, was cool enough to set this up, so she's not really terrible, is she?

Dean: No she's great, she has faith in us. She's really trying to get us in a situation that could get us some really good exposure. Plus I think she gets a kick out of taking 5 dudes home at the end of a show.

Me: I looked for your music on iTunes but couldn't find any... so if Megan wants to send me a CD... LOL. Do you have any CD's out, or are you working on one? If a Phile reader wants to purchase your bands music, where would they go?

Dean: We just recorded some songs and they are still being mixed, my guess is we will have them up on our Myspace soon.

Me: Also, do you guys have a website?

Dean: www.myspace.com/deanleetheunwelcomeguest.

Me: Thanks for doing this interview, Dean. I wish you luck, hope to see you guys in Florida soon and keep rocking.

Dean: Thanks, I enjoyed the self-indulgence.

PHINALLY

Okay, not all interviews can be fantastic, kids. Thanks to Dean lee for taking time answering my lame questions and to Megan Terrible the bands manager for setting it up. Thanks also to Wikipedia and to my friend Jeff. Now pay close attention, the Phile will be back on Wednesday this week, not Friday. Yes, in two more days the Phile will be back. The guest will be New Zealand singer Peter Kearns. So until then spread the word, not the turd. Bye, love you, bye.
