The Peverett Phile Interviews: Andy From The Parish Music Box

'Ello, welcome to yet another entry of the Phile Interviews, this time it's with Andy from the great band from England, The Parish Music Box.

Me: So, first thing, Andy, what part do you play in The Parish Music Box? Give me a rundown of the band.

Andy: I co-write the songs with Clive and generally run around making a nuisance of myself. I promise this is the most boring answer of the entire interview. The band is a 6 piece comprising assorted refugees from bands that did, almost did and never had a chance. The Dylans and Longpigs feature in certain members’ pasts (as well as a 2 stretch and a year as “Mr October” on a US porn site, charmingly named “Slutwife99”). I sing, Clive plays guitars, James plays guitars, Pete plays drums, Jimmy plays bass and Luka tinkles the ivories. The album was produced by Colin Elliot at Yellow Arch in Sheffield. They get a certain sound there. It’s an old factory, shabby as hell but has a great feel. Really added something to the songs. We are on a mission to bring Lounge Country to the good people of Great Britain. We like it mellow and slightly retro in a late 60’s kind of way…think the early days of colour TV, the AA side 7” single and the soundtrack to a badly dubbed French detective movie. Our album is out in April 09!

Me: That's a very unusual name for a band, The Parish Music Box. Where did that name originate from?

Andy: We wanted a slightly quirky and very British name. The Parish kind of fitted, but it seemed a bit too Indy or Britpop (shudder). I love old wind up gramophones and jukeboxes so the idea of a music box appealed. A gramophone, a Dansette or an iPod – take your pick. So, Music Box kind of stuck. Put it all together and you get The Parish Music Box.

Me: So, Andy, are you the guy in the fancy red suit?

Andy: Just give me a white beard and a big sack I am good to go! Yup that’s me. Gene Pitney on a bad trip. I wasn’t dipped in Cuprinol by the way; I had just come home from vacation. That was a great night. Any show with the words “sold out” is a good one.

Me: Your new CD is called "Paradise Is Pocket-Sized". Is that a reference to a vagina? Or do I have a sick mind?

Andy: You are sick, sick, sick! I like the way you think! (A chorus for a Ting Tings song if ever I heard one). If I say, “Yes, Pocket-sized is about Vaginas”… I have to say that it is about taking pleasure in small things or my girlfriend will make a hasty (and incredibly violent) exit. It is in fact the idea that pleasure comes from the simplest things in life. We want to make simple, lush, filmic music that helps people everywhere get laid, or fall asleep after.

Me: I looked for your album on iTunes but can't find it. Most Phile Phans know I get 99% of my music by downloading from Apple. If the CD is not on iTunes will it be soon?

Andy: Sore point! We are working on it. But anyone who wants the album can contact us and we will get it to you by plane, train, download or gentleman’s conveyance without further delay. Watch this space!

Me: I know a little about Chiswick, where the band originates from, but most of my readers wouldn't have. Can you tell us a little about it? I am originally from Balem.

Andy: Chiswick is a suburb of London, in the west, by “the dirty old river” Thames. It was home for a while to another hero of ours Steve Marriot of The Small Faces. The area is not the most rock n roll area admittedly, but it’s surprising the trouble a single man, a suburb and a bad attitude can get into…as our tune Chiswick Green explains….”Oh Cathy, I caused such a fuss, I was touched by a friend on the top of a London omnibus. Oh Mother, I’m in such a mess, I was touched by a girl, from Page 3 of The Western Daily Press. On Chiswick Green I’ll kiss them all, close my eyes and hear them call, but they never write or call at all”. The Streets video for “Your Fit (but don’t you know it)” was filmed in Chiswick. Everything you need to know is right there in that 3 minutes…watch it with the sound turned down and Chiswick Green playing!

Me: I looked at your influences on your MySpace site, and was fascinated by you mentioning Brian Wilson. He is the best thing to come out of the Beach Boys. Have you ever met him? He would seem fascinating to interview.

Andy: I agree. Think about all the things he experienced and the times they lived through. I’d love to sit in the sand pit and play a few numbers. I saw him play “Smile“ in 2004. He sat behind an electric piano all night but never played a note! I am not sure he would have known if you were talking to him; he seemed to have this other worldliness about him. Just say NO kids!

Me: Also, have you ever met Nick Cave? I went through a period when I listened to a lot of Nick Cave, back when I was a lonely miserable bastard. Your music seems a lot more upbeat then his.

Andy: Never met him; would love to though. I think there is a huge vein of humour running through miserablists like his and Morrissey’s work.

Me: How often do you tour the United Kingdom and have you ever played in the States? If so, where and how was that?

Andy: We had some label issues last year that keep us off the road, but you can expect to see the band out and about in the UK in the spring. We’ll also be doing a “coffee shop” acoustic tour where folks can come along, meet up, have a cup of hot brown and hear us do our thing.

Me: What is your favourite Foghat song? I ask all my interviewees that?

Andy: Take it easy….. Check ‘em out on YouTube…the fella on the bass looks like he is about to spontaneously combust in a supernova of cholesterol!

Me: On your MySpace page you have a video of one of your songs... "Bring It On". Tell me about the video, and is that the first one the band did? I was expecting the band to show up in it.

Andy: We do…the eviscerated organs are all ours! The director is an Italian film maker who fell in love with the song and re-cut a short film he had made using it. We were blown away. That’s why we aren’t in it. You’ll be able to hear us doing our stuff in the new movies 2,000,000 Stupid Women and The Last Paradise both out in 09.

Me: Your music reminds me of Wilco. Do you know much about Jeff Tweedy (Wilco's singer)?

Andy: I love Wilco. “She’s A Jar” is an all time favourite of mine. If we remind you of Wilco I am a happy man! I loved Golden Smog, without knowing he was part of the band. He got two Grammy Awards, didn’t he! I’ll take that compliment thanks!

Me: Do you have any websites you would like to plug? Also, if any of the Phile readers would like to purchase your CD (me as well) where would we get it from?

Andy: Sure thing and thank you! CD launch will be announced on one or all of these… www. myspace. com/theparishmusicbox, www. theparishmusicbox. com (live soon), http://indiestore. 7digital. com/theparishmusicbox/, http://www. caffenero. com/musicdatabase. asp?Section=News.

Thanks, Andy, for a great interview. Well, phans, that's it for the interviews until Saturday when it's Bryan Eden's time. He is the singer for the band Tribe of Eden. The regular entry of the Phile will be posted Friday night, so until then, spread the word, not the turd.

The Peverett Phile Interviews: Chris Hirons From Going After Zen

Welcome to the Phile again for a Tuesday. So, do you all have Obama Fever? Anyway, we'll talk about that on Friday. Today we have an interview with Chris Hirons from Going with Zen, a very cool band. So, here's Chris.

Me: Hello, Chris, welcome to the Phile. How did you know what I was going to look like in five years? Who is that fat dude?

Chris: A friend did that from a pic of me only my head though I'm not that fat.

Me: I have to ask you who is Zen, and why are you going after him or her? LOL.

Chris: Zen is a form of Buddhism.

Me: Seriously, where did you come up with the name?

Chris: When G.A.Z. was formed there was originally two members, me and a friend Garry, I asked him 'what are we going to call this project GAZ?' and he said that's it GAZ so we came up with Going After Zen nothing spiritual just a bit of fun. (Gary only played guitar on "Meltdown" & "Turn the Page").

Me: Your music is listed as Alternative, Electronica and Experimental. All I can say is you can say that again. Tell me more about your music.

Chris: I like to experiment with sounds, nothing to out of the box but nothing to mainstream I like the freedom to be able to record what I like.

Me: Where do you record, and how many instruments are actually played. You seem to have a lot.

Chris: I record at home on a purpose built audio computer, a Carillon AC1, I have had it for six years and it has just been respeced to keep it up to date, I use Cubase SX with an Edirol DA2496 8in 8out audio/midi interface, I play bass guitar, guitar, keyboard with various soft synths and use a drum machine and drum samples, anything that works really, but 90% of the music is played in real time.

Me: Okay, I am gonna be honest, I never liked Pink Floyd and your music is very Pink Floydish. Are they your number one band?

Chris: I dont think my music sounds very Floydish although people have said this, I did the "Think Lloyd" track in tribute to Rick Wright and that is Floyd influenced and yes they have always been my favorite band.

Me: I put in an interview request to Roger Waters, Chris. Would you help me with the questions if I get it?

Chris: I'll give it a go

Me: You are from the UK, right? I am originally from London and lived in Oxford. Whereabouts are you?

Chris: I live in Rugby, Warwicksire home of the game. And Holography in fact.

Me: Apart from Floyd, what other bands do you listen to?

Chris: Alsorts really I was brought up on rock, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbeth, the usual, then got into prog rock, King Crimson, Yes, ELP, Fripp & Eno Gong, Hawkwind etc
then jazz fusion with bands like Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius is my fave bass player, John Mclaughlin, Stanley Clarke, the list is endless, these days I listen to anything. I like browsing on myspace there is a lot of great stuff out there.

Me: Chris, who else is in the band?

Chris: There is just me after Gary left a couple of years ago.

Me: Do you play live? And if you do, do you have flying pigs?

Chris: I play bass in a punk band (www.myspace.com/thejellyheads) a quick plug there, which is great fun. But at the moment with Going after Zen I dont play live. But if I did I would have a couple of flying Buddhas. LOL.

Me: How many times have you seen Pink Floyd in concert? Are they aware of your music? I would think they would be impressed.

Chris: I went to see them perform "The Wall" at Earls court in 1979 we got front row seats, I also went to Berlin to see The Wall that was only Roger Waters and friends, amazing experience.

Me: I looked for a picture of you for this interview but instead all I found was a bunch of crazy art work. Do you do all that as well? It is very zen like.

Chris: Most of it is done by an artist friend Barry Beecher. He did the background painting on my profile page.

Me: This question is asked to all my interviewees... what is your favorite Foghat song?

Chris: Is that Foghat digs holes in space? Dont really know any off hand.

Me: What was the first instrument you learned to play?

Chris: The bass guitar.

Me: When you're not making music, Chris, what do you do?

Chris: Go fishing, watch football, I support Chelsea.

Me: I saw you are a friend of bass player Tal Wilkenfeld. Do you know her very well, or just through Myspace? I put in an interview request to her as well.

Chris: I wish I did know her well, I know her through Myspace. She plays with Jeff Beck, awesome.

Me: Is your music going to be put on iTunes?

Chris: I have one track on iTunes, "Tantric Templars" it is on a compilation album called "Tour de Force" ( there is a link on my page) it has also been released as a CD worldwide by Matchbox recordings. Hopefully I will be releasing more tracks with them in the near future.

Me: Did you come up with the quote "Without the stream stepping stones are useless"? If so, that's pretty deep, man. If not, who came up with it? It's pretty deep no matter who said it.

Chris: Yes I did after a couple of spliffs and a bottle of brandy.

Me: Thanks for taking part in this interview, Chris. Can you leave the Phile phans with another deep quote?

Chris: What you are now, so once were we what we are now so shall you be.

Me: Thanks, Chris, take care.

Chris: Thanks for taking an interest in my music.

And I thought spread the word, not the turd was deep. You can hear Chris's music at Myspace.com/goingafterzen. Tomorrow the Phile will be back with Andy from The Parish Music Box, a very cool band out of London, then on Friday the regular weekly entry of the Phile. On Saturday it's singer Jeremy Rowe, Sunday it's Bryan Eden from Tribe of Eden. So, once again, spread the word, not the turd.

The Peverett Phile Interviews: Jeff Hilliard

Welcome back to the Phile, with another interview, kids. I am just rolling them out, aren't I? Anyway, today's interview is with comedian and musician Jeff Hilliard. So, phans, here's Jeff.

Me: Jeff, welcome to the Phile. Uh, what do you do? Are you a comedian, singer, director, actor? How would you describe yourself?

Jeff: Basically I’m just a creative person, I’m not really concerned with any particular label for myself.

Me: Tell me about Tardtastic, your new band? Is that a "Doctor Who" reference (TARDIS)?

Jeff: The name came from a conversation I was having with a friend and was trying to describe my music, it’s both retarded and fantastic at the same time.

Me: Do you sing in the band?

Jeff: Yes I am the vocalist and write the lyrics.

Me: You host a show called "Wides Open". What is that about and where does it air?

Jeff: The show "Wides Open" can only be viewed at www.camel.com it’s a travel show that I got to host.

Me: You starred and directed a few videos for a band called Chevelle. Are they a L.A. based band? And how did you and them get together?

Jeff: I use to co-produce the Playboy Comedy Show at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas and Chevelle was recording at the studio there. We became friendly and they liked my videos and when their label wasn’t going to give them money to make a video for their song "I Get It" they asked me to make a video so I hired my friends at Boulevard Industries Production Company, Craig Bernard and Shawn Foster, we made the video for only $5000.00. The song was a hit and it was premiered on MTV2. The record label then hired us again to make a video for their next song The Fad, which we did for $10,000. I’m telling you how small the budgets are because the videos turned out pretty amazing for what we had to work with.

Me: So, how is this interview going so far?

Jeff: I’m just impressed anyone wants to interview me…

Me: On your Myspace page, you have a few clips from the BBC. Are you well known in England?

Jeff: The clip isn’t from the BBC, it’s from me… As far as being well known uh, I don’t really think I’m well known anywhere.

Me: Tell the readers of the Phile about Dr. Yippity and your Lifting Spirits organization. What does Lifting Spirits do? Apart from the obvious. That sounds like a great name for a bar, by the way. Lifting Spirits.

Jeff: Dr. Yippity just has to be watched…

Me: You have a lot of tattoos. How many and what are they? I have four myself.

Jeff: At this point they kind of just blend into one another, so I wouldn’t know how to count them.

Me: What do you do for MTV2?

Jeff: Nothing, just was in Chevelle music video, they just used my image on their website.

Me: Here's the question I ask all my interviewees... what is your favorite Foghat song?

Jeff: "And I Do Just What I Want".

Me: Tell me about Weirdoland, your hometown. That sounds like a place where I would fit in. I was born in Weir Hospital, London. I think the D just fell off the sign.

Jeff: I moved a lot growing up so I never know how to answer that question without a really long answer. So to me LA is home and it’s pretty weird…

Me: So, did you read the Peverett Phile before you excepted this interview? If so, what do you think?

Jeff: No I hadn’t, but I haven’t read any ones blog except once I read a comedian friend of mine blog Alex Blagg. He is very funny… Never really got into reading blogs.

Me: I ran out of questions, Jeff. Do you have any last remarks you would like to say or any websites you would like to plug?

Jeff: Thank you for checking out my work… myspace.com/tardtasticband, myspace.com/JeffHilliard, youtube.com/JeffHilliard.

Me: Jeff, thanks for taking part with this. I really appreciate it. I hope it was as fun for you to answer as it was as fun for me to ask.

Jeff: Anytime.

That was a fun interview. Thanks again to Jeff, and make sure to check out his videos at youtube. The P.P.I. will be back tomorrow with Chris Hirons from the band Going after Zen. Then on Wednesday it's Andy from The Parish Music Box, then on Friday it's the regular update of the Phile. So until then, spread the word, not the turd.

The Peverett Phile Interviews: Britney Christian

Hello, kids, welcome to another entry of the P.P.I. So, how are you? Today's interview is with a young singer named Britney Christian who will become a big star before we know it. So, phans, here's Britney...

Me: Hello, Britney, and welcome to the Phile. How are you?

Britney: Doing great!

Me: I have to ask you, straight of the bat, did anyone ever tell you that you look like a young Lisa Marie Presley?

Britney: I actually don't think I've gotten that one before...

Me: You just came off a tour in Missouri. How was that? I bet it was cold.

Britney: The Missouri tour was great! I had a lot of fun doing it! It was definitely cold! And it did snow a couple nights. Its kinda cool to see the snow during this time of year it makes it feel a lot more like Christmas, we definitely don't get that in So-Cal.

Me: You live in California, right? I hope the fires weren't near you.

Britney: I do live in California, the fires were somewhat near, but our house wasn't in any danger.

Me: You just did a show with a kid named Devon Werkheiser? Isn't he from the Nickelodeon show "Ned's Declassified"? Is he a singer now? How was he?

Britney: Yes, he was Ned in the Nickelodeon show, now he's singing too. He's got a really cool acoustic sound going on! Very nice voice.

Me: Britney, I enjoyed your CD, which is available on iTunes, pholks. Anyway, you wrote most of the songs on it, right? Where did you get the inspiration from, you are so young?

Britney: Several of the songs on the record I pulled from personal experience in my own relationships, heartbreak, etc. When I don't have anything entirely song-worthy going on in my own life I draw ideas from my friends relationships, and fictional characters in movies and books!

Me: Are you writing songs for a follow up CD right now?

Britney: Yes I am! Several songs that may make the record are up on my Myspace page now. My most recent is called "Love Bribery" which I'm very excited about. I sang it live at my last couple concerts and it really seemed to get people up on their feet, rockin out!

Me: Britney, I have to hand it to you, you sang the National Anthem at more sporting events then anybody I know. Do you know the song by heart by now?

Britney: Oh definitely! When you're up there in front of 40,000 people you better know that song like the back of your hand! I was actually just practicing it before this interview:)

Me: Speaking of... you sang at Dodgers Stadium when you were like what, 12? Were you nervous? I mean, you must of sang before thousands and thousands of people?

Britney: Yes, I was 12 when I sang at Dodger Stadium the first time and I've sang every season since! I actually wasn't nervous! I think thats a separate blessing that I don't get stage freight. At that age, I had a much harder time of singing in front of 4 people that I knew as apposed to 40,000 I didn't. Now it doesn't really matter how many people are there:)

Me: Who goes on tour with you, Britney? If you were my daughter I would hire a team of bodyguards to watch over you. Your family must be supportive.

Britney: My family is super supportive! My mom actually comes with me on every tour and so does my little dog Butler! I've had my sister on a couple tours also when she's not in school and the rest of the family keeps begging to go too. As for the body guards, I'm actually a 3rd Degree Black belt so I don't think they worry to much!

Me: Tell the readers of the Phile about Milk Rocks! I am so dumb, when I first heard about it I thought it was a new candy.

Britney: Its definitely not about candy! The whole idea behind the "Milk Rocks!" campaign is to promote healthy living, healthy lifestyle and of course drinking milk!

Me: So, how many cartons of milk with your pic on it did you have to get for your family as souveniers?

Britney: I only have like 3! Can you believe that? We had to steal those 3 too:)

Me: Weren't you recently featured on the "Today Show"? Was that the highlight of your career? Or is this interview the highlight?

Britney: LOL, definitely this one:) The "Today Show" segment was actually about a year ago. It was a segment on the new fad of girls picking up rock and roll instruments. Say, 20-40 years ago, it wasn't very common for a girl to play an instrument like guitar or drums and now there's lots of girls like myself playing, which I think is awesome!

Me: Are you going to keep singing, Britney, or do you want to go into acting sometime?

Britney: Singing will always be my main focus, thats my passion. However I'm actually already into acting! I have a small part in the Dreamworks film coming out called Hotel for Dogs! I'm very excited to see it when it comes out in theaters in January:)

Me: When you're not performing, traveling or writing, what do you do in your spare time? Go to the beach, movies, the Beverly Center?

Britney: In my spare time (which isn't too abundant!) I like to do Tae Kwon Do, my whole family actually does it and we're all blackbelts so its a fun family thing. I love going to the movies, I'll see anything for the chance to sit in the theater and eat popcorn and milk duds... thats actually a lyric in one of my songs off of my CD called "Where you Got Me". And right now I can't keep my head out of a book because I'm obsessed with the "Twilight" series! After seeing the movie I went out and bought all the books!

Me: Do you have a boyfriend?

Britney: Nope, I'm flying solo. In my profession I don't really come across many guys my age on a regular basis.

Me: I have to ask you about your influences. You named pretty much every rocker chick out there, but no guy singers. Why is that? Have you ever met any of your idols?

Britney: I'm definitely influenced by guys and girl singers! As far as girls, I would say my inspirations growing up were: Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, Pat Benetar etc. But I was also influenced by man guys such as: Queen, Elton John, Styx, Michael Jackson and even Elvis! I haven't actually met any of them but I did see Mariah Carey in a small concert a couple years ago and she walked right past me during the concert, it was pretty awesome.

Me: I have to ask you this. It wouldn't be a Peverett Phile interview if I didn't... what is your favorite Foghat song? You might be to young to know who they are.

Britney: Oh man, I guess I'm too young, I've actually never heard of Foghat!

Me: You graduated from high school, right? Did you finish with good grades? Are you going to college?

Britney: Yes, I actually graduated at 16 and I had straight A's all through school so I ended up with a 4.1 GPA. I was an overachiever, but I guess its just my personality to do everything to the best of my ability. I'm actually not in college right now, I'm pursuing music (and acting) full time! When I get the time, I would love to take some online classes from Berklee School of Music. They have some great courses offered.

Me: Finally, is there any advice you want to give the Phile readers, or any websites or words of wisdom you can speak of?

Britney: My advice, which is the message behind a lot of my songs is, be yourself and don't let anything get in the way of doing what you love! As for websites, be sure to join me on myspace: myspace. com/britneychristian and I would love to have you on my youtube channel as well: youtube. com/user/britneychristian7.

Me: Thanks, Britney, for taking time out of your day to do this interview. You've been a good sport. Keep rocking.

There you go, kids. She was a good sport and that was a good interview. Next time I interview her I will teach her about Foghat. LOL. And speaking of Hotel For Dogs I'm gonna take Logan to see it now. The Interviews will be back tomorrow with Jeff Hilliard, a very funny comedian and musician. So, until then, spread the word, not the turd, and thanks again to Britney.

The Peverett Phile Interviews: Melissa Joan Hart

Welcome back to another entry of the Peverett Phile Interviews. Today's guest is none other Melissa Joan Hart. This interview is kinda short and she only answered one third of the questions I sent, but for someone like her that has a busy career I am just happy that she took time out to answer my reply nonetheless my questions. Anyway, here it is, the 20th interview... Melissa Joan Hart!

Me: Melissa, you are originally from Smithtown, Long Island. I grew up in Port Jefferson also on the Island. What school did you go to and did you go to Pt. Jeff often?

Melissa: I was born in a hospital in Smithtown, but raised in Sayville, up through middle school, then I was tutored in Florida.

Me: You have a lot of siblings. Are you close? And do they all act?

Melissa: All of my siblings has acted at least once, but only Emily continues to.

Me: Is it true you collect Shirley Temple stuff? Is there a lot out there? That seems obscure. Have you ever met her Ms. Temple?

Melissa: I was very fortunate to have met Mrs. Temple-Black when I was preparing "Child Star". I do collect things, but there is WAY too much out there to ever have a complete collection, I stick to my favorite things (a few dolls mostly).

Me: You had some very sexy pictures taken as you were growing up, Melissa. That 'Details' shoot of you in underwear, and the naked and pregnant pictures. Would you ever do Playboy if you were asked?

Melissa: I have never posed naked except for my husband (the pregnancy photos were from a private shoot that were stolen). I have not really thought about it.

Me: Melissa, is your first name Melissa or Melissa Joan? Or is Joan your middle name?

Melissa: My name is Melissa Joan Hart (first, middle, last) all of which I was born with.

Me: Let's talk about your first show, "Clarissa Explains It All". Back then, your show was pretty different then what Nickelodeon played. But now you have "Drake & Josh", "iCarly", "Ned's Declassified", etc. Kids shows like that are big business for Nickelodeon and Disney. Man, I forgot what the question was. Do you look at those shows and think that's where you started? Can you give the kids on those shows advice?

Melissa: I would only say to current child-stars to stay centered, grounded and family-oriented. My family, GOOD friends and the drive to remain "professional" about my job has kept me from drinking excessively and from drugs.

Me: I read once that you have a potty mouth. I cannot imagine you swearing. Do you?

Melissa: I wouldn't say I have a potty-mouth per se, but I have been know to say an expletive from time to time.

Me: Tell the Phile phans what to expect with your two upcoming projects, "Nine Dead", and "Your Presents Requested."

Melissa: "Nine Dead" is almost done with post-production and will hopefully have a venue soon, "Your Presents Requested" will be released when ABC Family deems it so, probably in the spring.

And that's it. I hope to interview Melissa again in the future when she has more time and maybe her husband. Anyway, thanks again to Melissa for taking time out to answer those questions. Tomorrow the Phile will be back with an interview with singer Britney Christian and then on Monday with comedian Jeff Hilliard. So, until then, spread the word, not the turd.

Kiss Bush Good-Bye... The President, Not The Female Part

PHIRST OF...

Hello, welcome to the most updated blog on the internet, the Phile. This is the regular entry with Bush as President, kids. Can you believe that? I think I am speaking for the whole world when I say don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. Rod Blagojevich was formally impeached on one charged of corruption and three charges of helmet hair. He is remaining defiant. He held a press conference, and at the end of the conference, he twirled his hair like helicopter blades to fly far, far away. A poll by a real estate Web site found that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was America’s No. 1 choice for celebrity neighbor. She even beat out Oprah. Which seems kind of crazy to me because if you lived next door to Oprah, your house might look like a mansion. If you live next door to Sarah Palin, your house might look like an igloo. You might have seal skin for a bed. Not to mention, Oprah won’t shoot your pets. The Detroit Auto Show opened on Monday. America’s automakers are showing off their latest cars. Unfortunately, they didn’t get as much of the bailout as they thought, so a ticket into the auto show costs $1.3 billion. They’re putting bigger rear view mirrors on cars, which I think is terrible. People in L.A. already spend too much time looking in the mirror — putting on their makeup, checking their lipstick . . . the women are even worse. What became of electric cars? They were here one minute, then they were gone . . . like parachute pants. Iranian protestors were burning pictures of Barack Obama the other day. I thought, C’mon! He isn’t even in office yet! I don’t think these guys are angry — I think they just like fire. It’s winter in Iran and they’re cold. The Internet is full of men looking for dates for the inauguration. What ever happened to the Washington tradition of getting a hooker? One week left of President Bush. He gave his final press conference. He’s never really been a fan of press conferences mainly because the press never really understood him . . . mostly because he makes up his own words. Ann Coulter sat down with the ladies on “The View” to promote her new collection of irrational remarks. All five co-hosts came at her collectively, and wisely, they all did it at once, so no one could understand anyone. There’s a new study out that says too much caffeine can cause hallucinations. I think it’s true because I was at Starbucks today, and I hallucinated that a cup of coffee cost $4. Then I hallucinated that the counter guy was trying to sell me a jazz CD at 7 o’clock in the fucking morning. Andy Rooney turned 90 years old this week. Why is he so angry? He only works three minutes a week. President Bush has declared a state of emergency for Washington, D.C. Apparently, the president obtained information that on Tuesday, an unidentified black man was plotting to break into and actually live in the White House. The president was on “Larry King” for a parting interview before he tries to find his way back home to Texas. Larry King asked him if he lost any money in the crisis, and surprisingly, Bush said he has no idea where his money is because his money is in a blind trust managed by a Nigerian prince who’s about to collect a huge inheritance. It seems fitting that since he doesn’t know where our money, he shouldn’t know where his money is.

JANUARY 16TH IN HISTORY

1936
Serial killer cannibal Albert Fish executed at Sing Sing. God wanted him to castrate boys, and who was he to disagree. At his electrocution, the twenty-nine needles he had inserted into his crotch meant he needed a second jolt.
1942
Raising money for the war, actress Carol Lombard and her mother are killed along with a score of others in a Las Vegas airplane crash.
1969
Jan Palach self-immolates in Wenceslas Square, Prague, to protest the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia. His gasoline powered sacrifice starts a wave of copycat suicides, seven of which are successful.
1987
President Leon Cordero of Ecuador is kidnapped by followers of Gen. Frank Vargas, held in a Quito prison for a 1986 coup attempt. Vargas is free and so was the President. Lesson: crime pays.
1989
Three days of race riots begin in Overtown, Miami when a black man fleeing on motorcycle is killed by a Hispanic police officer. 125 blocks are sealed off during the riots.
1991
Operation Desert Storm commences as Baghdad is pummeled live on CNN. Targeted with smartbombs are "command and control facilities" and Saddam Hussein himself. We seem to miss both, but do manage to kill about 100,000 Iraqi soldiers in the surreal bombardments that follow.
1997
Bill Cosby's 27 year old son Ennis William Cosby is shot to death at Skirball Center in Sepulveda Pass, near Los Angeles CA. It was a robbery attempt while he was attempting to change a flat tire.

SOMEONE PHAMOUS HAS DIED

Claiborne Pell: And our first stiff of the year is the exciting senator from Rhode Island, creator of the Pell Grant, and apparently the only politician on all of Wikipedia without a "scandals" section. Going to be a big year.

Pat Hingle: Hingle buried.

Griffin Bell: Rung.

Patrick McGoohan: Number Deep 6.

Ricardo Montalban: Boss...? Boss...?

Andrew Wyeth: Easel come, easel go.

SOMEONE I WON'T BE INTERVIEWING

Boy George's troubles with the law took a serious turn in a London courtroom Friday when a judge sentenced the '80s pop idol to 15 months in jail for falsely imprisoning a male escort at his home in 2007. Judge David Radford told the former Culture Club singer (whose real name is George O'Dowd) he was guilty of "gratuitous violence" for handcuffing and beating with a chain a 29-year-old Norwegian man he had met online and invited to his London apartment for a nude photo shoot, Britain's Press Association reports. Supporters gasped, but O'Dowd, 47, is reported to have shown little emotion during his sentencing at Snaresbrook Crown Court, London. He was jailed immediately.

SHARPENING AXES

Bad Ass Animals Presidents Kept As Pets
The last thing the White House needs is another dog, damn it. That's been the animal of choice for the last several presidents. And so, as Barack Obama decides between a Labradoodle and a Portuguese water dog, we remember a time when the leader of the free world kept a pet that refused to be tamed--and was often perfectly capable of devouring a human.
Josiah the Badger. President: Theodore Roosevelt. For most Americans, when the president comes to town they dress up in their best red, white and blue, wave a miniature stars and stripes and hope the most powerful leader in the western world will give 'em a smile.
But in 1903, one little girl--perhaps the most awesome little girl ever born--decided to throw a badger. That's not a metaphor. She threw an actual badger at President Theodore Roosevelt. On one hand, you wonder how she survived the encounter--this was Teddy Roosevelt, after all. Then again, you realize that in Roosevelt's world, a thrown badger was probably a common form of greeting. Still, badgers are fierce little bastards and one wonders how the little girl was able to even get a hold of one, let alone hurl it at a passing Theodore Roosevelt as his train pulled out of some backwater train station in Kansas. She even managed to yell the critter's name. And so, little Josiah the badger passed from Kansas flatland to White House opulence.
The first family bottle-fed Josiah until he cut his teeth, at which point the badger would zip along White House floors, nipping and biting at the heels of passers-by. It should be noted that getting your heels bitten by a wild badger was the least-violent greeting one could hope for when passing through the Roosevelt White House .
Old Whiskers the Goat. President: Benjamin Harrison. If there was ever a creature that hated spending time at the White House more than George W. Bush, it was Old Whiskers.
You might suspect that Old Whiskers was a nickname for the 23rd president, a stodgy ol' coot with more than a passing resemblance to Obi Wan Kenobi... but it was in fact the name of the goat he shared an address with, which was given to Ben's grandchildren by the ol' coot himself.
If only Harrison had been as wise as Obi Wan (or any Jedi for that matter, 'cause how cool would it be to have a Jedi as the leader of the free world), he would've thought twice about adding the animal to the stable of pets the first family had already amassed. Upon moving in at 1600 Pennsylvania, Old Whiskers got busy thinking of a way to make the president look like a dumbass. Why was the goat so bitter? Well, the grandkids used Old Whiskers as a work horse, tying a harness and miniature stagecoach to the goat who would then pull the kids around the lawn of the White House. Finally, Old Whiskers decided he'd towed the bratty grandkids for the last fucking time. He took his shot and bolted out the White House gates (Apparently at that time, the White House gates were just sort of left open, just in case one of the neighbors wanted to wander on in and borrow something from the Lincoln bedroom). What ensued was a wild goat chase down Pennsylvania Avenue, involving the grandchildren and the president himself, clutching his top hat and holding his cane as his constituents pointed and laughed. We have to assume that the whole affair took place in fast-motion while somebody played "Yakety Sax" in the background. The animal was finally caught and returned to the White House lawn, and everyone shook their head, smiled and thought about what an amusing story it would make for future comedy websites.
Pauline Wayne the Cow. President: William Taft. Taft was the fattest president to ever grace the White House. Tipping the scales at a weighty 300+ pounds, it seems only fitting the 27th president of the United States would have a cow as his first pet. Pauline Wayne was quite the heifer herself, although how the Holstein got the name Pauline Wayne is unknown. She was a gift from a Wisconsin senator who presumably thought the always hungry president would slaughter the cow and invite him over for steaks on the grill. Instead, Taft let the cow graze--and presumably shit profusely on--the White House lawn. In turn, she provided raw milk (and possibly crippling diarrhea) to the first family for the last three years of Taft's presidency.
Although we couldn't find a source on this, it's likely Pauline supplied the gallon of butter that Taft and six White House aides needed to free the president from the White House bathtub every morning. After a buttery-soft Taft left office, Pauline--the last cow ever to call the White House home--was shipped back to Wisconsin. The steaks were excellent.
Billy the Pygmy Hippo. President: Calvin Coolidge. Billy the Pygmy Hippo found his way to the White House via Liberia after he was captured there by Harvey Firestone, maker of Firestone tires. There's a certain irony to capturing and enslaving an animal from a country that was founded by freed slaves from the United States, but I digress... Firestone believed the pygmy hippo would make a wonderful gift for President Coolidge, already a collector of strange and exotic pets. By the time Billy arrived, Coolidge had amassed an assortment of dogs, birds, a wallaby and a domesticated raccoon named Rebecca, a filthy but favorite pet of the first lady.
But it turned out "pygmy hippo" was a misleading term (no doubt coined by the crooked hippo pet industry) and Billy eventually grew too big to stay at the White House. At this point begins a string of events that would lead Billy to become more influential in the hippo world than Coolidge was among the humans. First, the Coolidge clan turned him over to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. He had developed a reputation as being "frisky" and, with zookeepers eager to get their hands on some pygmy hippo baby-batter, he was paired with another hippo, Hannah. The two made lousy parents, culminating in the death of their third child when Hannah rolled over and crushed it. Like most teenage parents, the two eventually figured out what to do with the kids: let someone else deal with them. In this case, it was zookeepers from across the country. Over the course of the next 25 years, Billy got busy getting busy with Hannah. In all, she gave birth to 15 of his children. While she spent her days being pregnant, Billy continued to sew his wild oats with another hippo gal pal, Matilda, who popped out an additional eight kids. Zookeepers were able to breed them and breed them some more, to the point that the majority of pygmy hippos in captivity today are direct descendants of Billy. So, not only did he spread his seed across a large chunk of the globe, but he lived until 1955... outliving Coolidge by 23 years. If hippos had high schools, they'd name one after Billy.

I WENT TO THE MOVIES

The Spirit
Rookie cop Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht) gets gunned down but returns from the dead as his grungy city's mysteriously unkillable, fedora-and-trenchcoat bedecked guardian angel, The Spirit. He battles night after night against arch-nemesis The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) and a collection of hot women that would give Hugh Hefner pause. Surprisingly, Macht (who was greeted with cries of "Who?" when casting was announced) delivers as the squared-jawed man-slut superhero who solves problems with his fists and compulsively hits on with every woman who crosses his path. At times, he seems lifted straight out of the original Will Eisner comics. A couple of moments hit the mark—like the Spirit taking out a purse-snatcher without so much as interrupting his stride—and the sheer insanity of the story keeps you watching. Unfortunately, Miller's attempts at "borrowing" Robert Rodriquez's Sin City visual template doens't work because, well, we've seen this done and done better already. In fact, Miller's decision to direct his own work is a mistake—he can't handle the shifts from campiness to stilted seriousness to parody, and following the movie is like trying to make sense of eight ADD-children telling you different stories at the same time. And Sam? We love you, man, but seriously…take a breather. You've shouted enough to fill this lifetime (good thing all that noise doesn't keep Scarlett Johansson from nodding off for most of the film, though). And people unfamiliar with Miller's work will find some of his, um, personal kinks (misogyny, Nazis) off-putting. In fact, even if you are familiar… Keep an eye on Seychelle Gabriel, who plays the younger version of Eva Mendes' character in flashbacks. This is only her second role after playing "Very Attractive Girl" on an episode of the Nickelodeon show "Zoey 101". Get ready to be typecast. From 1 to 10, I gave it a 5. Would I buy it on DVD? MAybe in the used bin if it has cool extras.

WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN?

No one can stop the Watchmen! Not even a determined and wiley Fox. The days of tension-filled angst and potential March madness are over -- The Hollywood Reporter has posted that Warner Bros. and Fox have settled that pesky Watchmen copyright suit that has been driving us all nuts for the last few months, and are going to present their agreement to Judge Gary Feess to get the case dismissed. After trying to become co-distributor for the Zack Snyder film, Fox has agreed to leave it all in the hands of Warner Bros., and just take a hefty cash payment, plus a chunk of the revenue. They're also calling off the locksmiths, security companies, personal bodyguards, and booby trap makers that would've been needed to protect them from angry fans, had the release date been postponed. Now, rather than nasty comments about each company, both Fox and Warner Bros. are wrapped up in "good faith" claims and happiness, eager to move on from this whole ordeal and be chummy. However, THR did point out that the company is said to be setting their sights on producer Larry Gordon -- the guy who shopped the project without securing the proper rights -- to recoup their settlement costs. Whatever happens now, at least we got what we want -- March 6 will still be the day that movie theaters shake under the stampede of Watchmen fans.

GEEK TALK

Samuel L. Jackson might be out as Nick Fury, telling Hero Complex: "I saw Jon Favreau at the Scream Awards and we had a conversation. He said, 'I hope things are working out for you because we're writing stuff for you.' Then all of a sudden last week I talked to my agents and manager and things aren't really working that well. There was a huge kind of negotiation that broke down. I don't know. Maybe I won't be Nick Fury. Maybe somebody else will be Nick Fury or maybe Nick Fury won't be in it. There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world so [they're saying to me], 'We're not making that deal.'" Sam Mendes told MTV that he's still waiting for a Preacher script before he'll commit to the project, as he's not very good at "developing" projects, he needs to read the script. But he does love Garth Ennis' series. "I think it's absolutely brilliant. It's a gripping story, fantastic characters, great visual landscape. It mixes supernatural and real worlds brilliantly, it's not entirely a CGI creation if you make it into a movie. It's funny, and it's absolutely, completely blasphemous, possibly even sacrilegious I would say. Which might be a dangerous thing to take on. Whether or not I have the skill to make it into a movie, I don't know."

The Peverett Phile Interviews: Charlotte Sometimes

Welcome to another entry of the Peverett Phile Interviews, I am your host, Jason Pervert. In yesterday's post I called today's guest Charlotte Something, when her name is Charlotte Sometimes. Yes, I am a moron. Anyway, Charlotte is an American singer-songwriter based out of New York and currently signed to Geffen Records. Her debut album was released on May 6th, 2008 and is titled "Waves and the Both of Us". So, Phile phans, here's Charlotte.

Me: Hello, Charlotte, welcome to the Phile. So, how are you doing?

Charlotte: I am doing great, how are you?

Me: Fantastic! I have to say I love your CD "Waves and the Both Of Us". I downloaded it from iTunes. Every song is great, but what's the story about "How I Could Just Kill A Man."? Is that song about anyone in particular?

Charlotte: I wrote it about a crazy boy I was dating... I was trying to leave him, and he actually said, "how could you just kill me like this?" ...easy

Me: So, Charlotte, when you're Charlotte sometimes, who are you other times? LOL. Is Sometimes your real name?

Charlotte: Sometimes isn't my real name no...

Me: Do you know Good Charlotte? You should tour with them.

Charlotte: Ha... uhh no, lol.

Me: Okay, seriously, where in New York do you live? I grew up on Long Island in a town called Port Jefferson. Have you heard of it?

Charlotte: I haven't heard of it, I live in the city.

Me: Let's talk about the CD. Like I said, I love it, and recommend everyone buy it, download it, and play it. Where did the title come from?

Charlotte: The title is from one of the songs on my CD, but it's about the relationship you have with yourself and others... the unspoken and the spoken.

Me: Who produced it, and tell me about your band.

Charlotte: Sam and Dave from Fresh Kills... and my band is right now Coley... whom is my keys player and best friend. He's amazing, please check out his solo stuff. The Queen Killing Kings.

Me: How did you become involved for Rock the Vote? Did you vote and are you happy who won?

Charlotte: I asked to be apart of it. And I am so happy that Obama won. I voted and I am proud to be an American now :)

Me: Did you tour behind the CD? If so, did you make it down here to Florida? Are you going back on tour in the new year? I really want to see you in concert.

Charlotte: Yes I toured straight for a year and half. We are taking a little breather for the next month or two from touring. But hopefully we will be in Florida soon!

Me: I saw on your blog, which I will ask you about in a minute, that you posted a clip from "Little Britain." Are you a big fan? If so, ever see "League of Distinguished Gentlemen", which is another British comedy show.

Charlotte: I love Little Britain!! LOVE IT! I have never seen the other show though. I am sure it's wonderful.

Me: Now, about your blog. Tell the readers of THIS blog about your blog. Have you read my blog?

Charlotte: My blog... hmm well it's foreversometimes.com and I just kind of say whatever I am feeling at that moment. It's not that interesting haha. Sometimes I post new songs.

Me: Hey, what is the connection between you and Nordstrom's? You were in an ad, right? Can you shop there for free from now on? Do you like to shop?

Charlotte: I wish I could shop for free! ha... I love to shop.

Me: Charlotte, let's talk about your influences. You have a wide spectrum, don't you? I am a big fan of Van Morrison and put in a request to interview him. Who are the Postal Service? If you could only take one CD on vacation with you, what would it be?

Charlotte: That's a lot of questions in one! Ha. I am a fan of any great song. The Postal Service is a brilliant band that everyone should listen to.

Me: Can you recommend any other bands or singers that might want to be interviewed for the Phile?

Charlotte: Hmmm, not sure...

Me: Charlotte, here's another typical question. You can do a duet with anybody you would like, who would it be?

Charlotte: Ben Gibbard.

Me: Here's a question I ask everybody I interview... what is your favorite Foghat song?

Charlotte: Huh.

Me: When you are not working, what do you do in your spare time? Do you have a boyfriend?

Charlotte: I read, go to readings and museums, hang with my girls. I do not have a boyfriend.

Me: What are the tattoos on your wrists, and do you have any others?

Charlotte: They say Charlotte and Brand New Colony.

Me: When are you planning on releasing your next CD? Are you starting to write for it yet?

Charlotte: I have over 50 songs for the next CD... not sure when I will be working on it.

Me: And finally, Charlotte, is there anything you would want to tell the phans of the Phile? Anything you wanna plug?

Charlotte: Please buy my CD!!!!

Me: I wish you all the luck in the world, Charlotte. Love your CD. Take care and be good.

Well... do you get the idea that during the interview she wondered what he hell she was doing answering these dumb questions. Anyway, I really do love her Cd and recommend you download right now. So, the next entry of the Phile will be on Friday with the normal weekly update, then on Saturday it's the Phile's 20th interview and I have... are you ready for this? Melissa Joan Hart. Yes, Clarisa and Sabrina herself! So, until then, spread the word, not the turd and remember to vote for Amanda and Travis Marsh at mavric-awards.com.
